Up to nine million people a year fall victim to identity theft, according to the Federal Trade Commission. More than two-thirds of all victims have no idea where the thieves got their information, according to a recent survey of victims by the Identity Theft Assistance Center. - Report the theft to the Federal Trade Commission (877) ID - THEFT
- Place a fraud alert on your credit report with all three credit bureaus
- Contact your financial institutions
- File a police report
